When to Come

September and October are the best months on the coast. The ocean is at its warmest, the summer crowds have gone, and the mornings are clear. Late spring is the opposite. May Gray and June Gloom are the local names for the marine layer that settles in overnight and usually burns off by early afternoon. It is still warm, just grey until lunchtime. Winter is mild and quiet, and it is when the tide pools are at their best and the gray whales pass Point Loma. Summer is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year, and it is driven as much by events as by weather.

Spring

Wildflowers inland, whales still passing offshore in March, and the last of the good tide pool tables. The marine layer builds through May.

Summer

The busiest season, and the one that books furthest ahead. June starts grey, July and August are hot and full, and the events calendar runs hard from mid-July.

Fall

The best time to be here. Warmest ocean of the year, clear mornings, thinner crowds and lower rates than July or August.

Winter

Mild, quiet and cheap by San Diego standards. Rain comes in short spells, the coast stays walkable, and the tide pools are at their best.

Events Worth Planning Around

Comic-Con
Late July at the Convention Center and the single busiest week of the year for downtown and coastal rentals. The 2027 show runs 22 to 25 July, with preview night on the 21st.
Del Mar, Summer Meet
Mid-July through Labor Day, racing Thursday to Sunday. Opening Day is one of the biggest social events on the local calendar. The 2026 meet closes on 7 September.
Del Mar, Fall Meet
A shorter meet in November, running Friday to Sunday plus Thanksgiving Day. In 2026 it runs 6 to 29 November.
San Diego Pride
Mid-July, with the parade through Hillcrest on the Saturday and the festival in Balboa Park across the weekend. In 2026 it ran 11 to 19 July.
Miramar Air Show
Late September at MCAS Miramar, with the Blue Angels closing each day. Admission and parking are free. The 2026 show runs 25 to 27 September.
Gray Whale Migration
December through March, when the whales pass close enough to watch from the bluffs at Cabrillo National Monument without a boat.

The Weeks That Sell Out

Demand here is driven by events more than by weather. Comic-Con week, Del Mar Opening Day weekend, Pride weekend and the Miramar Air Show all move rates across the whole county, not just downtown. If your dates fall on any of them, book well ahead. If they do not, September and early October give you the best weather of the year at lower rates than midsummer.
